They took one of our redoubts, armed with twelve 16-pounder cannons, they put nails in all of them so that they could not be used[180]. But they were unable to progress beyond that redoubt. The sappers who were there ran away because they had no arms other than their tools, with which they could not defend themselves. As soon as the cannons were nailed, they returned.

On the one hand, there was no reason to be surprised at the heedlessness as much on the part of the sappers as the picket, because all were tired and very sleepy. During this siege, a soldier only went back to the tent to sleep every 6^th or 7^th night. One day he was on guard duty, the next day in the picket, from the picket he went to work building reinforcements, from there he picked up his position on guard duty again the following day. So that he could only sleep in a tent every 6^th or 7^th night[181]. In the morning on that day, the English General sent an aide-de-camp, a square of fabric hung from his sword.
