Just behind this residence are soldiers’ barracks. It should be pointed out that we were surrounded by Dutch ships, war vessels and frigates as well as commercial ships. About 10, 12 paces from our ship was the Dutch captain’s ship, from which the retreat was announced every evening by a cannon blast. Upon our arrival, we were visited by numerous Dutch soldiers, all Germans, compatriots and acquaintances etc.

Gleich hinter diesem Gebäute stehet auch die Casserné der Soldaten. Auch stunden sehr viele holländische Schiffe rings um uns herum, sowohl Krieg-Schiffe und Fregatten, als auch Kaufmans-Schiffe. Ohngefähr 10 oder 12 Schritte von unserem Schiff, stunde das holländische Comanden-Schiffe welches alle Abend den Lartraitte-Schutz thäte. Wir bekamen bey unsrer Ankunftt auch sehr vielen Besuch deren holländischen Soldaten, welches lauder Teutsche waren aller Sorten Landts-Leute wie auch viele Bekanten von uns etc.

In the evening, the Dutch posted a guard before our ship, in order to prevent any of the soul-selling soldiers[310] from coming aboard our ship, even though during the day, from 6 o’clock in the morning to 6 o’clock in the evening, at any moment they could come aboard to visit their compatriots, no one prevented them from doing so. This port stretches the whole length of the town, there are beautiful structures on either side. As for the inhabitants, they are German for the most part and most speak Low German. They are of the Protestant religion.

Gegen Abend wurde ein Schildwacht an unser Schiff aufs Land gestellt von den Holländer, welche mußte verhütten daß keine von den Seelen-Ver-käuffer-Soldaten mehr auf unser Schiff konten gehn wärend dem Tag aber von morgens 6 Uhr biß des Abends am 6 Uhr konten sie allezeit bey uns aufs Schiff gehen um ihre Lands-Leute zu besuchen, welches ihnen nicht verwährt wurde. Dieser Hafen erstreckt sich gantz durch die Stadt, auf beyden Seiten schöne Gebäuten. Was die Einwohner anbelangt seynd mehrstentheils Deutschen, oder sonsten Blatt-Deutschen genandt. Ihre Religion ist Reformiert.
