He proclaimed that he would remember whoever, soldier or noncommissioned officer, would be in front of him on the redoubt and he would hold his hand out to him, and that man would receive a good tip from him.

Count Guillaume[191] promised the same thing. This promise worked, and we took the redoubt by storm. Count Guillaume was wounded during the operation, but his wound was not very serious. Now you can imagine what happened inside the redoubt, now that we were there. At that time, in that place there were men of 4 nations: French, English, Scots, and Germans etc. As soon as the Hessians and the Hanoverians saw that it was lost, they gave themselves up as prisoners, but as the racket was too great, it was not possible for our general to master the situation. The soldiers were so unrelenting against one another, that our own men killed one another. The French lashed out at any men who wore a blue uniform and ran them through with their bayonets. But the Royal Deux-Ponts regiment also wore blue, this is why many of its soldiers were killed. And as the Hessian and Anspach troops had nearly the same uniforms, and the English were in red, which in the dark of night looked blue, there was no mercy that night.

Jetzt kan sich jedermann vorstellen, wie es alda zuginge, da wir in der Schantze waren. Alda waren jetzt von 4 Nationen Volck untereinander welche waren : Franzosen, Engländer, Schotten, Deutschen etc. Sobald aber die Hessen und Hannobraner sehen, daß es verspielt ist, gaben sie sich gleich gefangen, weil aber der Lermen zu groß ware, konte unser General nicht mehr Meister werden. Die Soldaten waren alda übereinander verbittert, so daß unser eignen Leute einander umbrachten. Die Fran-zosen stachen alles, was blaue Röcke hatte über Hauffen. Weil nun das Regt Zweybrüken auch blau hatte, wurden sehr viele dadurch erstochen. Weil die Hessen und Anspacher Truppen theils fast die nemliche Uni-form hatten, die Englische hatten roth, welches bey der fünster Nacht auf blau schiene, also ginge es in dieser Nacht sehr unbarmherzig zu.
