There were also a few large redoubts on the left wing, very well served by the 3 Agenois, Gâtinois, and Touraine regiments. The Americans were on the right wing.

Wiedrum waren etliche grosse Schantzen auf dem linken Flügel, welche auch wohl versehen waren durch die 3 Regimenter Agenois, Gadinois und Touraine. Auf dem rechten Flügel stunden die Americaner.

The general then ordered the colonel commanding the artillery to wish the English goodnight at dusk, which he did with pleasure. By way of a welcome, to begin we sent 18 shells in rapid succession. All fell precisely in their large redoubt, so that the occupants no longer knew where to flee. Shortly thereafter, we sent 16 twenty-four-pounders all at once, into the same redoubt. The Americans received the same treatment, in such a way that the English no longer knew how to save their lives. This lasted all night, without a break, to the point that the ground was trembling as if there had been an earthquake.

Auf andere Schantzen wurde das nemliche gethan, so daß die gute Engländer ihres Lebens keinen Rath mehr wußten. Dieses tauerte die gantze Nacht stehts fort ohne aufhören, so daß der gantze Erdboden zitterte wie bey einer Erdbebung.

The enemy fire was also very heavy. But they could not hold a candle to the French. Our constables directed the shots with such precision that they hit the cannon wheels in the English redoubts, so that many of their carriages or cannon carts were rendered useless.

Der Feind feuerte auch sehr starck. Doch aber langten sie den Franzosen das Wasser nicht. Unser Kunstabler schossen den Englischen die Räder von ihren Canonen in den Schantzen ab, so daß sie viele ihrer Laffeten, oder Canonen- Wägen nicht mehr brauchen konten.
