Candlemas day, when we were going to proceed to the distribution, a terrible accident occurred on our ship, in the galley[305]. When the storekeepers were getting ready to distribute the eau-de-vie, they removed the cover from the barrel of alcohol in order to take the desired ration. It is commonly known to be dark in the galley, and that one must always carry a lamp; the wine stewards then set their lamp on the barrel of eau-de-vie, but as the fellows were drunk, they overturned the lamp due to inattention, which fell in the barrel, which caught fire immediately.

Lichtmeß-Tag als die Distribution gemacht solte werden, ist ein erbärmliches Unglück ent-standen auf unsrem Schiffe in der Cambus : Als die Campusier den Branden-Wein ausge-ben solten, sie schlugen den Boden an einem Faß Brandenwein heraus um den selben aus-zumessen. Weilen es aber gemeineglich alle Zeit dunckel in denen Cambussen ist, so daß man stets Licht brennen muß ; also stelleten diese Kellermeister ihr Licht auf daß Branden-wein-Faß und durch Unachtsamkeit, deren besoffnen Kerls wurde das Licht umgestoßen und in das Faß Brandenwein gefallen und zu gleicher Zeit finge es auch an zu brennen.
