on the parade ground of the city of Brest, which is the main maritime port of all of France; there the largest war ships can enter all the way into the city, all the way within the port, it is also there that one can see war ships and other ships of the king right in the middle of the city, surrounded by many royal structures, there one can see the pools where the ships can be hoisted out of the water in order to be repaired; the job of hoisting the ships is done by galley convicts. There one can also see a large ship with a roof like that of a house, covered with tiles, which is inhabited only by galley slaves[376].

auf dem Paraden-Platz in der Stadt Prest, welches auch der Haupt-Meer-Hafen in gantz Franckreich ist, allwo man mit den grösten Krieg-Schiffe gantz in die Stadt hinein fahren kan, biß ans Ende, allwo auch allezeit die Krieg-Schiffe, nebst andern königlichen Schiffen gantz oben am Ende der Stadt zu sehen seyn nebst noch vielen königlichen Gebäuten, wie auch die Passaings allwo man die Schiffe darin auf drocken Land stellen kan um sie auf dem Boden reparieren zu können, diese Arbeit um die Schiffe hinein zu schaffen muß durch die Gallärs verichtet werden. Auch ist alda zu sehen ein grosses Schiffe mit einem Dache wie ein Hauß, mit Zieglen gedeckt, welches auch allezeit mit Gallär bewohnet wird.

As for the city, it is so well fortified that it is impossible to capture it by sea, because the port is completely surrounded by fortified structures[377]. On one side, high up, there is the invincible citadel whose shooting range stretches over the whole harbor; this harbor is large enough to safely hold 5 to 600 ships that can anchor without being in each other’s way [378].

Diese Stadt aber ist dermassen bevestiget, daß sie zu Wasser unmöglich ist einzunehmen, dan der Hafen ist gantz mit Vestungs-Wercker umringet. Auf der einen Seite befindet sich ein unuberwünd-liches Cidatelle auf einem Berge, welches die gantze Reede beschiessen kan, diese Reede hat einen Bezürg daß über die 5 biß 600 Schiffe ohne verhindert darinnen anckern könen, und alle in der Sicher-heit stehen.
