On the 20^th, around 9 o’clock in the morning, a sailor perched atop the mast cried out that he saw land on our left. One hour later we had come so close to that land that one could leisurely observe its smallest details. Around 2 o’clock we were very near, and that land appeared quite lovely and nice, because there were greenery and trees everywhere.

Den 20ten gegen 9 Uhr des Morgens rufte ein Matroß vom Mast-Baum er thäte Land sehen auf unsrer lincken Seite. Eine Stunde darauf näherten wir uns diesem Lande daß man es genau von freyem Gesicht betrachten konte. Gegen 2 Uhr kamen wir gantz nahe daran, welches Land gantz schön und lieblich anzusehen ware, weil es gantz grün mit Bäumen ware.

That island is inhabited by the Spanish and bears the name Puerto Rico, it is already situated in the West Indies[295]. Around 3 o’clock we were very near the port entrance: in all the forts and batteries the Spanish signaled to us to make it known whether we were friend or enemy, immediately signalled we were friends.

Diese Insul wird von den Spanier bewohnt und heißt mit ihrem Namen Porto-Rico und liegt schon in West-Indien. Gegen 3 Uhr kamen wir gantz nahe vor den Haffen : allwo die Spaniollen schon auf allen Forts und Baterien signalierten, ob wir Freund oder Feind seyen, wir gaben uns aber gleich als Freund zu er-kennen.

As soon as we were identified as friends, we could approach the batteries, very near the city named San Juan, the capital of the island and a large garrison. This city of San Juan is entirely situated behind the great fort, so it is practically invisible from the sea. One enters the port by circumventing the great battery, the city being located beyond the river, on a plain; this city as well as the island of Puerto Rico can be seen on the following page.

Sobald wir als Freund erkennet waren, fuhren wir biß an die Baterien an, gantz nahe bey der Stadt mit Namens Sanct-Johannes, und ist auch die Haubt-Stadt auf dieser Insul, und ebenfalls auch allezeit gut mit Truppen besetzt. Diese Stadt Sanct-Johannes liegt gantz hinter dem großen Fort darum man sie auch nicht wohl vom Wasser sehen kann. Die Einfahrt in den Haffen gehet gantz in einem Bogen um die große Batrie herum, die Stadt liegt auch jenseit des Flußes auf der Ebenen, welche Stadt und Insul Porto-Rico auf der andern Seite zu sehen ist.
