The pilot immediately reported to the captain: he inspected the ship straight away and made the same assessment, namely that the ship had sunk 3 and a half feet in relation to its normal draft[284] and that water was already coming in through the portholes[285].

The captain immediately ordered the helmsmen[286] to throw all the anchors into the water, as well as all the equipment found on the ship and inside. This order from the captain was executed straight away. And so, on the night of the New Year, around 11, 12 o’clock, all our regiment’s equipment was thrown into the sea, as well as the officers’ trunks[287]; after which we noticed an improvement in the ship’s situation, water was no longer coming in as often, because it had become lighter now that we had thrown things overboard that were worth thousands. But it was better to lose all the equipment than to let all the men die.

Welches auch gleich verrichtet wurde nach Befehl des Schiff-Capitains. Also wurde in der Neue-Jahrs-Nacht gegen 11 und 12 Uhr alle unsre Regiments-Equipages ins Meer geworffen zugleicher Zeit auch alle Officirs Küsten : gleich darauf fande man Linderung am Schiffe daß das Wasser nicht mehr so häuffig hinein-lieffe, dann es wieder etwas leichter nachdem als vor viele Tausend ins Wasser geworffen waren. Doch aber ware besser alle Equipages verlohren, als die viele Leute so darauf waren zugrund gingen.
