The capital of the island is Kingston, but that was not where we were held prisoner, but instead about a half hour from there, in a small village with the name of Spännischtawn. The island of Jamaica is one of the richest of all the West Indies because of its uncommon vegetation, among which one finds sugar, coffee, cotton, pepper, chocolate etc. This island is also so well fortified that it is impossible for the enemy to penetrate it without being destroyed. Near the entrance there are the most tremendous fortifications that one can encounter. It is the Fort Royal, near the entrance of the port, where some one hundred cannons are put up.

Die derInsel Jamaica ist auch eine der vornehmsten in gantz Westyndien wegen ihren raaren Wachsthümmer, worunder sehr viele Zucker, Caffé, Baumwolle, Pfeffer, Schoquelat etc. seyn. Auch ist diese Insel dermassen bevestiget daß es unmöglich ist vor einen Feind hinein zu komen ohne zugrund gerichtet zu werden. Es befinden sich bey der Einfahrt so fürchterliche Vestungen als man nur sehen mag. Es ist bey der Einfahrt im Haffen das Fort royal welches mit ettliche hundert Canonen aufgepflantzet ist.
