In the evening, we threw the sounding line into the water, but we still were unable to find the bottom.

Gegen Abend fingen wir wiedrum an Bley-Wurff zu sencken, aber wir fanden als noch keinen Boden.

On the 16^th, the horizon was misty until around noon; then the sky cleared and the winds became cool. Around noon we threw the sounding line over again to find the bottom. At about 60 fathoms, it touched the bottom, which delighted everyone. Around 8 o’clock in the evening the bottom was 47 fathoms below. Around 9 and 10 o’clock, we were still at the same depth, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. For most of the night we had furled[372] the sails around the yards because we were not far from land.

Den 16ten zeigte sich der Horizont wieder gantz neblicht biß gegen Mittag ; alsdan bekamen wir wiedrum hellen Himmel mit zimmlich starckem Wind. Wir senckten gegen 12 Uhr mittags wieder Bley-Wurff um Boden zu suchen. Sobald der Senckel ohngefähr 60 Klaffter tief im Wasser ware fande er Boden worüber jedermann erfreuet ware. Gegen 8 Uhr des Abendts fanden wir Boden auf 47 Klaffter. Gegen 9 und 10 Uhr hatten wir als noch die nemliche Tieffung, zu Zeiten etwas mehr, und auch weniger. Wir hatten mehrsten Theils die Nacht durch die Seegel aufgebunden, weil wir nicht sehr weit vom Land entfernet waren.

On the 17^th around 9 o’clock in the morning, we saw the land of France again for the first time. Everyone immediately began shouting Vive le Roy.
