Barely had we taken a few more steps before a sentinel called out on our left. He cried out in our direction “Who is there?”[188] in English. But we did not respond. Nevertheless, this sentinel did not open fire on us. He thought it was the English on patrol. We made our way forward a bit more, and we were already before the enemy outposts. Shortly after, a sentinel called out on our right. It was one of the sentinels from Hannover who cried “Wer da?”[189] As soon as he had called out three times, barely had he spoken the last word before he opened fire on us. The shot had hardly been fired before a fusillade was set off all around us, so fierce that it was as bright as daylight. But this did not trouble us at all and we continued to make our way forward.

Diese Schildwacht ware von den Hannobraner und ruffte Wer da. Sobald sie dreymal geruffen hatte, kaum hatte er das letzte Wort ausgesprochen, gabe er schon Feuer auf uns. Nicht so gut ware der Schuß ge-fallen, so feuerten sie schon ringsherum auf uns, daß es so hell ware als bey Tag. Wir aber stehreten uns an nichts und marschierten als fort.
