to Bettesbrück. We made our camp near a beautiful plantation. On the 10^th, the 2^nd brigade came to take the place of the first.

Bettesbrück. Wir schlugen unser Lager bey einem schönen Gändelmäns-Hoffe. Den 10ten kame das 2te Brigade in den Platz vom ersten.

On the 10^th, we set off again to travel 15 miles to Karls Trinckenspring, an agricultural estate. In this region, grapes grow abundantly in the forests; there are many to see, red as well as white, and they can be eaten, but they are much more sour and bitter than cultivated grapes.

Den 10ten brachen wir alda wiedrum auf 15 Meilen biß Karls-Trinckenspring ein Schändelmäns-Hoffe. In selbiger Gegend wachsen sehr viele wilde Trauben in den Wäldern so schön als man sie sehen mag, sowohl schwartze, als weisse, man kan sie auch geniessen, aber sie seyn viel saurer und rauher als die zahme Trauben.

On the 11^th, the first set off again to travel 9 miles to Bollingen, a small town in one of the most beautiful regions. Many muskrats can be found there[242]. These rats are the same size as domestic rats, they are grey and stink so much that it is almost unbearable. When you arrive in a place where they live, you can smell them from 800, even 1,000 paces. These rats also have very long tails, and when they are approached they defend themselves in the following manner: they piss on their tail, then roll it up into a corkscrew, then project it in the man’s direction, and when this piss lands on clothes or the bare skin of the face or hands it causes stains

Den 11ten brache das erste wiedrum alda auf 9 Meilen biß Bollingen ein Städtgen in einer überaus schönen Gegend. Alda trifft man sehr viele Biesem-Ratgen an. Diese Ratgen seynd in der nemliche größe als wie zahme Ratgen, mit grauer Farbe, sie stincken dermassen daß es fast nicht ausstehlich ist. Wann man in eine Gegend kommt allwo sie sich aufhalten thun, so schmeckt man sie schon auf 800 biß 1000 Schritte weit. Diese Ratgen haben auch überaus lange Schwäntze, wann man nahe zu ihnen kommt währen sie sich auf solche Art : Sie seigen diese Schwäntze voll und ringlen sie wieder zusammen und hernach schnellen sie damit gegen den Menschen, und wan dieses bruntz auf eine Kleidung, oder auf die bloße Haut im Gesicht, oder auf die Hände komt, gibt es dergleichen
