Finally we found a way to come together, and our General gave us the following orders: the first soldier who dared hurt one of the prisoners would be condemned to death. After which calm returned. But complaints and groans could be heard everywhere. Some called out here, others there, begging to be killed for the love of God, as the redoubt was strewn with the dead and wounded, so much so that we had to walk on them. As soon as the enemy knew that there were Frenchmen in the redoubt, they fired against it all night long, and we had to endure great suffering.

Sobald der Feind wußte, daß Franzosen in der Schantze seyn, wurde die ganze Nacht darauf gefeuert, daß wir große Noth darinnen leiden mußten.

There were no other cannons in this redoubt other than 2 beautiful mortars that shot 50-pound cannon balls. The general immediately offered them as gifts to the two regiments, so that they could make them their emblem, and they can still be seen today[193]. They were immediately transported to the camp where they remained under guard.

Es ware auch kein ander Geschütz in dieser Schantze als 2 überaus schöne Haubizen-Kessel, welche Kuglen von 50 Pfund schossen.
