“hunger is a good cook”? That was why we had to consider ourselves satisfied with the food that was served to us and taste of it as if it were candy. When the cook prepares his soup, it is a surprising sight to see him put a large copper cooking pot on and off the stove in which he is to make the soup for 8, 9, 11, 12 hundred people and sometimes even more, as many as 14 hundred people[36].

Hunger ist ein guter Koch, alsdan mußten wir noch wohl zufrieden seyn mit denjenigen Speißen die er uns auftruge und sie uns wie Zucker schmecken lassen etc. Wann dieser Koch seine Suppe anrichten thut ist es ganz wunderbar zu betrachten, mit einem so grossen kupfernen Kessel auf und vom Feuer zu thun, worinnen auf einmal vor 8, 9, 11, 12 hundert Mann muss gekocht werden, und zu Zeiten noch mehr biß 14 hundert Personen.

As for the drink, the wine and eau-de-vie are excellent and the daily ration is a quarter of good red wine also distributed three times. If it is eau-de-vie, it is distributed in rations of a half quarter of a glass[37]. Regarding water, there is very little of it, and most often we are only given a quarter per day, so that thirst is always greater than hunger.

Was den Tranck anbelangt, von Wein und Branden-wein ist vortrefflich gut, und besteht des Tages aus einem und ½ Schoppen guten rothen Wein, auch in 3 Theil distribiert. Ist es Brandenwein so ist es auf den Imms ein halber Vierthels-Schoppen. Was das Wasser anbetrifft ist sehr wenig, daß zu mehrsten Zeiten nur des Tags ein halben Schoppen gegeben wird, so daß der Durst allezeit grösser als der Hunger ist.

Die Lagerstätte seyn auch nicht sehr angenehm dann sie bestehen aus Hamacken von Leinentuch gemacht diese werden an 4 Ecken mit Stricke schwebend auf-gehänckt, diese Hamacken werden eingetheillet vor 2 Mann eine, der mehrste Theil mußte allezeit auf dem bloßen Boden liegen, alda heiße es, wer gut liegen will muß zu Hauße bleiben.
