But as the ship had not gone completely under, the men aboard were safe, even if it meant staying in water up to their underarms, and until the next day around 10, 11 o’clock. That accident took place at night around 10 o’clock and it was very dark, that is why we only took notice the next day[240].

Doch daß das Schiff nicht gantz versüncken thätte, doch aber die Leute so darauf waren konten sich noch erretten, aber so daß sie biß unter die Aerme im Wasser stehen mußten biß den andern Tag um 10, 11 Uhr. Dieses Unglück geschahe des Nachts gegen 10 Uhr und ware dabey sehr fünster, darum konte auch kein Rath geschafft werden biß den andern Tag.

We remained in Williamsburg until July 2, 1782. They we set off in the direction of the New York region. We marched grouped together by regiment, because the heat was great and also because of water and the poor state of the roads etc.

Wir verblieben noch alda zu Williamsburg biß den 2ten Jully 1782. Alsdann sezten wir uns wiedrum in Marsch vor in die Gegend nach Neu-Yorck zu marschieren. Wir brachen jetzt alda auf regimenter-weis zu marschieren weilen die Hitze groß ware, theils auch wegen dem Wasser und wüsten Wege etc.

On July 2nd, the first brigade, which included the Bourbonnois regiment, left Williamsburg and arrived in Trinckenspring, a very open area, after 9 miles. On the 3rd, it was the Royal Deux-Ponts regiment that left to join the place where the first regiment was stationed. On the 4th, it was the 2nd brigade that left, one regiment at a time, to arrive in the place where we were.

Den 2ten Jully brache das erste Brigade, nemlich das Regiment Bourbonois zu Wiliamsburg auf 9 Meilen biß Trinckenspring ein grosses freyes Platz. Den 3ten brache das Regiment Royal Deuxponts auch auf und kame in d14en Platz vom ersten Regimen t. Den 4ten brache das 2te Brigade auch regimenterweis auf und kame in unser Platz.

On the 3rd, the first regiment set off again and travelled 8 miles to Barronsthawern, an inn in a beautiful region.

Den 3ten brache das erste Regiment wiedrum auf 8 Meilen biß Barronsthawern ein Wirths-hauß in einer schönen Gegend.

240. On page 106 of his journal, War Commissioner Claude Blanchard mentions the misadventure of the frigate La Diligente that ran aground at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, “by fault of the pilot”. This frigate heading to Boston sunk completely, while 23 sailors and soldiers perished.
