When our flotilla arrived near the Chesapeake Bay we had resolved to disembark and confront General Arnold. But as the English fleet was also sailing in these waters our plan could not be executed, as the English flotilla caught up with us, which we met within a few days and had to fight against, which arrived around noon. It was lost for both sides, and no one knew what they were thinking anymore, because our ships and those of the English were so mixed up that no one was able to recognize the other and one could no longer make the difference between a friend or an enemy[95]. During this battle the company of grenadiers from the Soissonnois regiment encountered the largest hardships, to the point that in 5-6 minutes it lost 52 men, without counting the previous losses. Weilen sich einestheils auch nicht zu verwundern ware, dann die Schiffe waren so nahe beysammen, dass sie einander mit
