On the 25^th, we went 18 miles to Baltimore, an almost entirely German city of considerable size, located along a beautiful river used by many, to which the city owes its flourishing commerce, considering the intense boat traffic[251].

Den 25ten brachen wir wiedrum auf 18 Meillen biß Baldimohr ein fast gantz deutsche Stadt von einer zimmlichen Größe, nebst einem schönen schiff-reichen Fluße, welcher diese Stadt sehr handelbar machen thut wegen seiner schönen Schiffart.

This river is a large sea inlet that stretches to the Chesapeake Bay where it comes together with the Potomac River, as well as many other waterways. The mouth of the James River, or James-Fluß is also found in the Chesapeake Bay etc. There, the York River, which goes all the way back to Yorktown, Virginia, where it connects with several tributaries, also empties into the sea.

Dieser Fluß ist ein starcker Arm vom Meer, und erstreckt sich biß gegen der Bucht von Schessabeck allwo der Fluße Phatomack sich auch mit ihm vereini-get, nebst noch vielen andren Flüßen. Alda bey der Bucht von Schessabeck vereiniget sich auch noch der Fluß James, oder James-Fluß mit ihnen etc. Wiedrum ergießt sich auch alda der Yorck-Fluß ins Meer, welcher sich erstreckt biß nach Yorck-Thaunp in Vir-ginien, allwo sich noch einige Flüße darein stoßen und sich mit ihm vereinigen.

We stayed in Baltimore, in our camp, for the whole of a month. Upon our arrival in the camp there was a great crowd that welcomed us very courteously; they recognized us as we had already come the year before, during our march to Virginia
